Welcome to our first srsRAN Project Newsletter!
With these quarterly newsletters, we hope to keep you updated on our progress with the srsRAN Project and in the loop on all of the activities and events taking place within the community.
This quarter, we're highlighting our progress with the srsRAN Project 5G CU+DU, as well as new additions to our project documentation. We have news on srsRAN Project workshop to be held in Arlington, Virginia in October and overviews of recorded presentations at events from earlier in the year. Finally, we highlight a milestone achievement with Europe's first end-to-end 5G NTN communication link.

Since the first release of the srsRAN Project back in February 2023, the development team has achieved remarkable progress, including four major tagged releases, bi-weekly rolling updates, and over 11,000 commits. This extensive effort began back in 2021 with a comprehensive re-design of the srsRAN code-base. Evolving from the srsRAN 4G framework to a cutting-edge O-RAN 5G CU/DU solution with srsRAN Project. The new code-base is highly portable, performant, flexible, and seamlessly interoperable with third-party solutions, marking a significant milestone in our project's evolution. |

Building on the initial feature list with each release and update, srsRAN Project now stands as the go-to option for users looking to deploy a 5G O-RAN compliant RAN solution without the need for complex software and expensive commercial hardware.
The current feature list includes the following: |

As well as tutorials, we have been busy documenting all of the latest functionality of the code, so that users don’t miss out on new features. This includes things like: |

How to use our Grafana-based GUI. A full configuration file reference document for the gNB, CU and DU; outlining each configurable parameter and how it can be configured. A detailed outline of the software architecture of srsRAN Project.

In the coming months, we will continue to enhance and expand our documentation with new tutorials, further additions to our knowledge base, and improvements to our developers' guide. If there is specific documentation you would like to see added, please let us know via our GitHub Discussions forum. |

srsRAN Project Fall Workshop 2024 |
|
|
The second srsRAN Project Workshop will be held at the Virginia Tech Executive Briefing Center in Arlington in partnership with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI).
This workshop will bring together the community of srsRAN Project users and enthusiasts from across Academia, Industry, and Government. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from leading experts in the areas of Open RAN, Mobile Wireless Security, and Next Generation Wireless and from colleagues about their experiences of using srsRAN Project to further their R&D objectives. The program will consist of talks and panel sessions and include technical presentations and workshops from both the srsRAN Project developers and members of the community.
This year we are also accepting proposals for talks and demos from the community. Talks wil focus on work using srsRAN Project and should be up to one hour in length. Demos will be displayed for the entire two-day duration of the event. Each demo will be assigned a fixed location at the workshop venue. The call for talks and demonstrations is currently open, proposals can be filled out and submitted via the link below. |

| Our CEO, Paul Sutton, spoke at OpenGovCon: "6G Innovation Day", hosted by the Linux Foundation ONE Summit in May. In his talk he discussed 5G and FutureG, O-RAN and the opportunity for an open-source “RAN Kernel” to ensure the continued success and security of mobile wireless telecommunications. |

Achieving Europe’s First E2E NTN Communication |
|
|
As part of our work in TRANTOR and together with colleagues at CTTC and HISPASAT, we have successfully achieved Europe’s first standard-compliant end-to-end 5G NTN communication. This was done using srsRAN Project, the HISPASAT satellite network and ground stations located at CTTC. The tests were carried out as part of Demo 1 for the project, achieving an E2E connection over a 16-QAM link.
